Expressionism

Expressionism (Latin expressio = expression – see: Wikipedia) began at the end of the 19th century. In the early 20th century, a second, more important movement followed, which was mainly to be found in Germany and which ended with the First World War.
The works of the Expressionists were not intended to serve the aesthetic enjoyment of the viewer, but rather the artists wanted to express the inner experiences of the people and not depicting external reality.
This was mainly achieved through powerful and high-contrast colors, mostly on large surfaces and in distorted and torn shapes.
