Impressionism

Impressionism

Impressionism (Latin impressio = impression – see: Wikipedia) emerged from a movement within painting in France in the second half of the 19th century. The impressionists do not tell a story in their works, but focus on sensual perception.
Impression means a quick, intuitive and (seemingly) improvised capture of a fleeting moment.
The observation of light effects and the changing color moods throughout the year was more important in Impressionism than the importance of what is depicted, which is why the Impressionists preferred to work outdoors (French: en-plain-air).
